Students are introduced to the historical, commercial, and professional language of fashion. Course topics include: History of Fashion, Primary Fashion Market Categories, Seasonal Deliveries, Customer Profiles, and Fashion Terminology.

Students are introduced to the fundamental principles used to develop fashion concepts and translate ideas into garments and collections.

Students develop foundational sewing and garment-construction skills through progressively structured projects. Technical Foundations include sewing fundamentals, Skirt construction, Dress construction, Pant construction, and Shirt construction.

Jacket construction is introduced only when the Professor determines that the class is sufficiently prepared for the additional level of construction.

Students learn how fibers become fabrics and how textile characteristics influence garment design and construction. Course topics include Fibers, Fiber Content, Fabric Identification, and a fun Fabric Tour.

Students learn the fundamentals of communicating fashion ideas visually. Course topics include Color Theory, Fashion Figure Drawing, Color Application, Fabric and Garment Drawing, and Movement and Fashion Poses.

Students are introduced to the technical process of developing patterns from measurements and design concepts. Course topics include Body Measurements, Skirt Drafting, Bodice Drafting, Sleeve Drafting, and Pants Drafting.

Students begin transitioning from individual garments to collection development. Course topics include Fundamentals of Capsule Collections, Moodboards, Concept Development, Translating Concept into Product, Collection Cohesion, and Accessories.

Final Project: Each student develops and constructs a 3-piece Capsule Collection using foundational skills developed throughout the Introductory Level. The Capsule Collection serves as the student’s culminating design project and becomes the foundation for their first professional portfolio.

Students learn how to present their work professionally and begin developing their first digital fashion portfolio. Course topics include Portfolio Presentation, Collection Photography, Digital Portfolio Development, and Presenting the Design Process.

Students are professionally photographed with their completed Capsule Collections and may use select images in their first digital fashion portfolio.
